A Behavioral Classification System for UFO Sightings

Mark Cashman, The Temporal Doorway

Sufficient catalogs and literature exist to distinguish a limited repertoire of UFO behaviors. In fact, what is fascinating is that these behaviors fit into a set of categories which at least appear to represent intelligent actions, and which are certainly of a countable number. This classification system is an "event" oriented system. In other words, it should be used to classify a UFO event, rather than an object.

A Critique of the Paranormal UFO Theories of Vallee and Keel

Mark Cashman, The Temporal Doorway

In the study of UFOs, two theories of the origin of UFOs stand out - the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (ETH) and the paranormal hypothesis (PNH). While I do not currently find that the data is sufficient to support either theory, I believe that paranormal theories of UFO origin have had a significant effect, and that, in general, that effect has not been beneficial to the advancement of the study of UFOs. I would not claim that paranormal theories of UFOs are invalid, but I would tend to say that they are unprofitable, in the sense that they predict everything, and, thus, nothing.

American Polygraph Association FAQs

The American Polygraph Association believes that scientific evidence supports the high validity of polygraph examinations. Thus, such examinations have great probative value and utility for various uses in the criminal justice system.  R

An Analysis of UFO Luminosity

Mark Cashman, The Temporal Doorway

The problem of UFO luminosity is an important one. Of all of the features of the UFO pattern, UFO emissions of visible light are among the most notable and characteristic. An analysis of photographs can reveal important features of UFO luminosity, given that the photos are authentic. In addition, there appears to be a close correlation between luminosity and behavior. The luminosity brightens, dims, changes color, and flashes, often showing a direct relationship to behavior.

An Introduction to MUFON

John Schuessler, MUFON International Director

The Mutual UFO Network, Inc. is an international scientific organization composed of people seriously interested in studying and researching the phenomenon known as Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) by combining their mutual talents, areas of expertise and investigative efforts. MUFON is the acronym for the Mutual UFO Network. MUFON firmly believes that a concentrated scientific study by dedicated investigators and researchers will provide the ultimate answer to the UFO enigma.  R

British FOIA Rendlesham File Released

The Times (London), 20 November 2002

The so-called Rendlesham File, now available for public inspection, is a fat catalogue of increasingly despairing correspondence between the Ministry of Defence and members of the public after the sighting of unexplained lights in Rendlesham Forest, near the RAF base at Woodbridge, Suffolk, in December 1980.  R

Comments On The Extraterrestrial Hypothesis To Explain UFO Data

Mark Cashman, The Temporal Doorway

There are several levels of theorization relating to the ETH. At the first level of theorization, we have the OEH - the objective existence hypothesis, which states: "UFOs are an objectively existent phenomenon, not a subjectively (i.e. psychologically or culturally) existent phenomenon." At the second level of theorization we have the ETH (and others, including the paranormal hypothesis). The basic ETH may be formulated as "UFO sightings are observations of technological objects which derive from an intelligent, non-terrestrial source." At the third level, we have theories of origin and intent. This article considers the second level hypothesis.

Condon Report Proves Accuracy of Witnesses

Brad Sparks, UFO Updates Mailing List, Apr 2001

As much as they like Condon's conclusions about the alleged unreliability and inaccuracy of eyewitnesses, debunkers have never done any in-depth study of the data on witness accuracy that is contained in the Condon Report. R

Cosmic Pro-Lifers

Kenneth Silber, TCS (Tech Central Station)

Questions about extraterrestrial life - whether it exists, what it would be like, how to look for it - generate very little scientific consensus. Some scientists enthuse over the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, which listens for radio signals from alien civilizations. Others propound the Rare Earth Hypothesis, which states that an array of unusual factors allowed complex life to arise here, and that any life we find elsewhere would likely be as simple as bacteria.  R

Determining The Truth Or Falsity Of The Misperception/Hoax/Hallucination Hypothesis (MHH)

Mark Cashman, The Temporal Doorway

It is my contention that the MHH (Misperception/Hoax/Hallucination Hypothesis) can, indeed, be proven or disproven. This document discusses the discriminators which I believe exist for this hypothesis.

Doing Science On UFOs

Mark Cashman, The Temporal Doorway

If we are ever to know whether or not UFOs exist, we must do science on the subject[footnote 5]. If we accept that UFOs are objectively existent, based on the evidence to date, then establishing the nature of the phenomenon and its technology (if any), will require science to be done on the subject. If we do not accept that UFOs are objectively existent, there is still much fascinating scientific work to be done in the areas of determining the genesis of these reports and the determinants of their structure, content, and the correlations between reports widely dispersed in time and space. None of this has been undertaken in any broad sense to date.

Exclusive Interview: Vallee Discusses UFO Control System

Open UFO Files To Rest Of Us Earthlings

Leslie Kean, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, December 13, 2002

There is no longer an acceptable justification for the withholding of reports on UFO incidents decades old, whether they are of defense interest or not. Nor is it acceptable for the attorney general unilaterally to refuse to enforce information act. The American people should not have to rely on Spielbergian science fiction for answers.  R

Politicking and Paradigm Shifting: James E. McDonald and the UFO Case Study (Thesis)

Paul E. McCarthy, December 1975, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Hawaii

Dr. McCarthy's dissertation is a remarkable document in the history of the phenomenon. In it, he chronicles the activities of Dr. James E. McDonald and other participants in a number of UFO-related controversies between 1966 and 1970. This was a critical period of scientific and political decision-making on the issue. Scientifically, this was the period when the Colorado UFO project was conducted; its report to the Air Force recommended that further scientific study of UFOs not be supported. Those who disagreed with the methods and conclusions of that project, most prominently Dr. McDonald, undertook an explicitly political campaign to persuade the public and the scientific community that the Colorado investigators (and by implication the scientific community as a whole) had gone astray. Dr. McCarthy's dissertation, in effect, links these two documents by telling the story of Dr. McDonald's involvement in both. But the dissertation goes further. Dr. McCarthy proposes the intriguing thesis that what Dr. McDonald attempted was nothing less than a fundamental "paradigm shift" in the Kuhnian sense, [3] in which an entire field of science goes through a revolutionary alteration of intellectual outlook and theoretical structure.

Seen a UFO? Seattle reporting center wants to know

The Associated Press, 07/27/2002

Proof that we are not alone? Almost certainly, says Peter Davenport, a former biotech executive and self-described “alien hunter” who has posted those and 1,124 other sightings already this year on the Web site of the Seattle-based National UFO Reporting Center.  R

SETI Institute - Statement on UFOs

In addition to the unlikelihood that we have been visited by extraterrestrials, there is no scientific evidence to prove it. Personal accounts are not physical or verifiable evidence. These reasons are sufficient to exclude UFO's from the research objectives of the SETI Institute.  R

The History Of The Disclosure Project

Dr. Steven Greer, Director, Disclosure Project

Beginning in 1993, I started an effort that was designed to identify firsthand military and government witnesses to UFO events and projects, as well as other evidence to be used in a public disclosure. From 1993, we spent considerable time and resources briefing the Clinton Administration, including CIA Director James Woolsey, senior military officials at the Pentagon, and select members of Congress, among others.  R

The Main Obstacle

Don Berliner, The Fund for UFO Research, Inc., 2002

There are two primary and closely connected reasons why UFOs are not treated seriously by the scientific community and the mainstream press. One is their acceptance of the work of the U.S. Air Force's Project Blue Book UFO investigation of 1948-1969. The other is their acceptance of the report of the University of Colorado's study of UFOs in 1966-1968, paid for by the Air Force.

It was not until I began reviewing reams of literature while doing research for The UFO Evidence, Volume II, in the mid-1990s that a more obvious pattern began to emerge: a strong correlation of sightings with nuclear weapons.

The Problem with "Disclosure"

Michael Brownlee, May 7, 2001, Awakenings

Beginning May 9, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Dr. Steven Greer’s long-held dream of bringing about public disclosure of the reality of extraterrestrial visitors to earth will reach its zenith. On that day, Greer – founder and international director of the non-profit Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (http://www.cseti.org/) – will host a major press conference featuring presentations by twenty-some “first-hand military and government witnesses to UFO events.”  R

The UFO Literature: A General Review (Dennis Stacy)

Dennis Stacy, MUFON

The following survey and summary does not pretend to be complete or objective; the field is far too vast for such sentiments and is expanding exponentially even as we speak. The UFO Phenomenon: Laugh, Laugh, Study, Study

J. Allen Hynek, Technology Review, July 1981, pp. 50-58

The phenomenon of "unidentified flying objects" (UFOs), though few would call it part of science, is also both shocking and paradoxical. UFO reports are often an outrage to common sense. The persistent flow of reports, from all parts of the world, of an object or a luminosity in the sky or on or near the earth defies rational explanation even when made by persons of acknowledged responsibility. Indeed, if these observations are even partially true, understanding them may require a breakthrough -- at least in our thinking about the world around us.  R

The Volume Of UFO Reports Over Time

Mark Cashman, The Temporal Doorway

Those who have studied the UFO phenomenon have long been aware that the volume and geography of UFO reports vary over time.

UFO Occupant Contact Behavioral Classification System

Mark Cashman, The Temporal Doorway

Close Encounters of The Third Kind[footnote 1], the designation coined by Dr. J. Allen Hynek for UFO reports where animate beings are observed in connection wth an unidentified object, are an important part of the phenomenon. Recently, another type of case, the abduction case, has also attained prominence in UFO research. The following is an attempt to impose order on CE3 and abduction reports by classifying them as members of categories.

UFOs - Extraterrestrial Probes?

James McDonald, Astronautics and Aeronautics, August 1967, p. 19-20

On the basis of an intensive study of the UFO problem, I believe that the extraterrestrial-origin hypothesis must now be given extremely serious scientific attention. There is, in my opinion, no sensible alternative to the utterly shocking hypothesis that the UFOs are extraterrestrial probes.  R

UFOs and the National Security State: An Unclassified History - Introduction

Richard Dolan, UFOs and the National Security State

The UFO problem is a real one. It has involved military personnel around the world for more than fifty years, and is wrapped in secrecy. Over the years, however, enough pieces of the puzzle have emerged to give us a sense of what the picture looks like. What I have tried to do is very simple: to use as many of those pieces as possible in constructing a clear, straightforward, historical narrative of the UFO problem, focusing on the national security dimensions.

UFOs in 15th century paintings

Richard Owen, news.com.au (Australia), December 04, 2002 (The Times / The Australian)

ITALY'S Old Masters were recording flying saucers and UFOs in their paintings as far back as the 15th century, according to a scientist in Rome. Roberto Volterri argues that artists dating back to 1406 included evidence of "strange objects in the sky" for later generations to see.  R

Historical Artwork & UFOs - UFOArtwork.com - Matthew Hurley

Matthew Hurley, UFOArtwork.com

For a number of years I have been intrigued by old artwork that appears to depict UFOs. The artwork in my collection consists of frescos, tapestries, illustrations, oil paintings and early photographs. Although some of the artwork represents actual sightings, others feature UFOs in a religious context. Whatever the truth is, there are UFOs in these pieces of artwork and one can ponder and reflect on this truth. I hope this collection will give gravitas to the idea that we have been visited by UFOs for thousands of years and whose occupants may have had an effect on our own genesis & evolution.
