elusive UFO's

In the early 1970's my family and I (4 adults and 1 child) watched a glowing cigar shaped object in the sky for about 4 minutes before it turned on it's axis and slowly moved out of sight. This was not my first and not my last mysterious sighting of something unusual in the sky, but other than talk to friends and relatives about what I and my family have seen, I have never reported or enquired about these sightings to any official body. Strange, that! During the last twenty years I have been interested in astronomy, but have never seen anything either throiugh my 'scopes or with my naked eyes in that time. Even stranger!

Report on Mass Observation of UFO lights, approx 1965, Westbrook, Isle of Wight, UK

In the summer of about 1965 or 1966, at Westbrook, Isle of Wight, UK, from a clifftop night-time campfire site organised by "The Crusaders" a christian youth organisation, myself and about 20 other youths aged 12 to 15 plus 3 or 4 adults clearly observed for over 5 minutes an inexplicable "mysterious lights in the sky" phenomenon as follows - which silenced everybody in the midst of a campfire song and caused one of the adults to say (ironically) "The martians are coming".

At about 60 degrees up vertically, in the dark and 90% clear nightitime sky, probably after 9:30pm as it was dark and UK summertime, a multitude of evenly spaced blinking white lights appeared, about the same size and colour as average stars, filling an uneven but roughly circular pattern covering an area of the sky approximately 3 times the diameter of an average full moon. I estimate conservatively thare were at least 20 such lights in the group pattern, blinking with an individually uneven frequency of about ½ to 1 second on and less than ¼ second off, not blinking in unison nor at the same frequency all the time, and moving about very slightly in location within the grouping. After about 5 to 10 seconds of this, they all instantly disappeared and started again almost instantaneously in a different area of the sky at least 4 full-moons diameter away, either higher or lower and to one side or the other. This instantaneously disappearing and reappearing group of blinking star-sized lights moving about in the sky every 5 to 10 seconds continued for over 5 minutes. Sometimes a wispy cloud went accross the group and partially obscured them, proving that they were definately above the height of the clouds (and therefore not insects etc).

My thoughts at the time were:
1. How are they moving about the sky so fast - it was physically impossible to move so far so fast.
2. Is everybody seeing this? - I looked around and everyone was gaping at them and we discussed it a bit but being kids most of us were making light of it as it was a bit scary. I couldnt stop thinking about it for weeks personally.
3. Could they be helicopters? No sound was heard at all from them and there were too many of them.
4. Could they be fireflies - not possible as twice I observed clouds partially obscuring some of the lights in the group.

Now it is over 40 years later I want to tell this story as I have never been able to think of a realistic possible explanation. I also have not been able to find any other record of this phenomenon. It may have been the summer of 1964, 65, 66 or 67 but no other years. My background is a degree in science and I have worked in I.T. for many years - basically a very logical thinker and trained observer.

i was comining back from the gym in finglas dublin an it was clear sky, me an about 4 friends seen a grey triangle shaped ufo it moved very very fast an den suddenly stoped over looking the land an den this stange ufo shot off into the sky like a bullet. we still cant get over it . i tryed to tell the police but they found it funny...we ar not alone in dis strange universe.

It was a big, white cricle that came right by my house it was like disco light but huge and you no like on flims they move when still in a cricle.Then when it moves it goes diagonal my dad saw it frist i was there for over half an hour.

i was in werneth flow in the hills when i saw a flying ufo far away and then it just shot out of no where right next to me in the sky i started crying and did 100 miles down the hill i was soooooooo scared
