Appearance / Description of Object(s)

My buddy and I were driving down I-84 west through Southbury back around 1992. We had noticed a large mass of lights moving slowly, heading east. We got off exit 14 in Southbury to follow this craft, which was now heading straight up main st. It moved very slowly and made very little noise. Kind of a low pitched humming sound. It ended up hoovering directly over the Mcdonald's parking lot where many people came out to witness it, police officers as well showed up. It just sat there and hoovered. The lights around the craft made it just visible enough to get a view of the underside- a series of complex looking metal gridwork, so it appeared to me anyway. As I watched it hoover, smaller lights began breaking off the main craft and seemed to be "chasing each other around", seemed to be moving at an amazing speed these smaller lights. It slowly moved away and continued to head east. Something I thought I'd never see again in a lifetime, but by sheer coincidence I did in fact see the same craft again a few years later. The strangest thing is that it came over the same hill as the one did a few years previous, as if it had used an established flight pattern. This time I could not stop, as I was traveling and had already passed the exit on 84 and was going over the lake zoar bridge when I spotted it. Now it would seem to me that whatever it was, it WANTED to be seen and using the same flight pattern would make one think that there are humans behind this whole thing, but for the life of me, and I will never understand this, how the hell do planes fly in formation, at night, without making noise, then HOOVER for what seemed like as long as they wanted?? I sit on top of the fence with this - have you any personal conclusions?? This will haunt me forever untill someone has a vaid explanation. Thanks for your time.

Size of Object(s)

Round, multi colored lights, seemed to change shapes from round to triangular, gridwork underneath { metal }, made very little sound. Smaller objects broke off the main ship and buzzed around very quickly
