Bill, I agree with you. The problem, as I see it, is the word belief. Belief is for religion. What we probably should say is “are UFO’s real and how do we prove this”. Even this is sort of silly when you consider the fact that there is enough evidence to prove that the things are machines and are under intelligent control (you can then take it from there). I also agree with you that most people don’t care. It reminds me of a line out of the fiction movie Men in Black where one character says to the other, in reference to aliens, “most people don’t need to know and don’t care anyway”. Ask some off your good friends what they think and see what kind of response you get.
And then there is our scientific community that can’t deal with it because these things exhibit characteristics that they simply cannot explain without new science based on principles we currently don’t understand. So if you can’t explain it, it can’t exist. Then you have the so-called “de-Bunkers”. The next time I hear someone tell someone else what they saw, that person (so called de-bunker) should be taken out and hanged. How the hell do you know what that person saw if you weren’t there? Also, if you are going to explain it, you better be prepared to demonstrate/prove to me your answer to what someone else saw and you didn’t. If you can’t prove or demonstrate what you propose as and answer, then get the hell out of my face. Go to the end of the line and start over.
If you are interested in new science, I mean stuff we simply cannot answer that is really real, then try this website Hessdalen.org. This is really interesting stuff. This is a real scientific study of something we currently cannot explain. By the way, I don’t consider what they are studying in the same category as what we are calling UFO’s. Anyway, just thought I’d add my comments.

I have seen 5 seperate UFO's in 25 years, at different times, all in Colorado. My 2 night sightings were of extroadinary hieght, both were mistaken for satelites while star gazing but these suddenly lit up brighter than a star and made 90 degree turns and disappeared at an impossibele rate of speed.
Sun bathing, staring at an absolutely cloudless sky, observed a fast moving silvery object at an altitude much higher than commercial or military aircraf, it also made a short, 90 degree turn and then seemed to vanish in place.
I was a passenger in a car on a frequently traveled mountain pass, observed two circular "pewter" colored looking ships, seemed perfectly round, flawless, a little smaller in size than a hot air ballon. Both hovered next to each other about 300 feet above the top of a hill. Observed for about 3 minutes, before vehicle went out of viewing range.
Seeing IS believing!

I've actually gotten to the point where I think answering this question is ridiculous. I now tend to treat people who don't believe in extraterrestrials with the same disdain that they heap on believers....like myself. I tend to ask this question a little different. I say, "Why wouldn't they be real?" What about them is unbelievable? Are you telling me that with the unintelligible vastness of the universe we are the only pathetic creatures out there? If we are then what a huge waste. If we are the epitomy of evolution and intelligence then whoever made this whole thing is quite a bonehead. No, the answer is that there are an unlimited number of species and beings out there most of which would defy complete explanation. Most people are concerned with what I call "surface phenomena". These are things that they can barely handle. These are things like - paying the bills, buying groceries, shopping for a new TV, following American Idol etc. The notion of introducing any type of real phenomena that exists below the surface is just not even remotely possible. I have friends that say things like - "Why would they come here?" I respond by saying - "For the same reason we go to the top of Mt. Everest." They say - "Why would they study us?" I say - "For the same reason we cut up mice and monkeys....because they can?"

They seem to be real enough to those people who witness unidentifiable things in our
immediate environment. Are UFOs real in the classical sense that they are vehicles operated either remotely or directly by entities not of this world....that is the question that everyone
would like to know. I believe life other than that on Earth is present in our solar system...probably primitive life such as simple single or multi cellular organisms
within our solar system. As far as the galaxy which we reside in and other galaxies and other domains within this universe...I have no doubt that anything form single celled organisms to life beyond our comprehension is in fact present. No, I have not to my knowledge ever seen what you may refer to as a UFO.

yes they are real, read about them in the bible. Some people must see to believe and even than they would probably say it is swamp gas. I saw a ufo when was in my teens and will never forget it. And yes I know what I saw!
