Science, Secrecy, and Ufology
Richard M. Dolan
Secrecy permeates the UFO field. What does this mean for Ufology as a science? Answer: the field cannot really be handled scientifically within the public domain. The great model is the Manhattan Project. When a project is undertaken at highly classified levels, you will find nothing of value about it within the mainstream. This was true during the development of the atomic bomb in the 1940s; it is true regarding the UFO. Published in the February/March 2001 issue of UFO Magazine.

A Review of Col. Philip J. Corso's Book, "The Day After Roswell"
Stanton Friedman, 1997
Over the past few months I have been asked over and over again what I thought about this book. I had done some preliminary checking on Corso a few years back when I first heard of him via the Army History Institute.

The Bob Lazar Fraud
Stanton T. Friedman, 1997
Incredible claims have been made about Bob Lazar for years. He supposedly is a physicist with an MS in Physics from MIT and an MS in Electronics from the California Institute of Technology. He was a "Scientist" for Los Alamos National Laboratory, and obtained a job back-engineering UFOs at a very secret site at Area 51 in Nevadathrough Dr. Edward Teller.

The Abduction Conundrum
Greg Sandow
An attempt to look at abductions objectively, with 52 footnotes, due attention to the arguments on both sides, and a little humor, too. But do the aliens really call themselves 'Zorphs'?

The Linda Cortile Case
Greg Sandow
An abduction that, supposedly, was witnessed by two federal agents and the Secretary-General of the U.N. -- and that's only the beginning of the most unbelievable UFO case ever vouched for by a major UFO investigator. Could any of it be true?

I know the Secret of the Flying Saucers
Maj. Donald E. Keyhoe, TRUE Magazine, January 1966
One night last February, over the North Pacific, a Flying Tiger Airlines crew had a startling aerial encounter. What they saw is a clue to a fantastic technical mystery. In its solution lies a prize so great that six government agencies are searching for it right now. The answer may not be far off. What they are searching for is the secret of gravity control.

The Formulation and Predictions of the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis
Brian Zeiler
The extraterrestrial hypothesis, or ETH, is formulated consistent with the accepted scientific framework for hypothesis induction. The null hypothesis to explain UFOs is that they are random, disparate misidentifications of atmospheric or artifical terrestrial phenomena. This is called the misidentification hypothesis.

Synopsis of Unconventional Flying Objects: JSE Review
Hal E. Puthoff
To the degree that the engineering characteristics of UFOs can be estimated by empirical observation, in my opinion the above-referenced, recently-published book by Paul Hill provides the most reliable, concise summary of engineering-type data available. [1] The data were compiled over decades of research by a Chief Scientist-Manager at NASA's Langley Research Center [2] who acted as an informal clearinghouse for UFO-related data.

Implications
Walking a Tightrope
Richard M. Dolan
This article continues some themes I discussed in "What Are They?" This time, I discuss some of the dangers we face as a civilization over the next twenty years; dangers which could well result in an infrastructure collapse. If we can hang on, however, the development of advanced machine intelligence will give us a very wild ride indeed. Either way, the civilization we have now will be unrecognizable -- within the next generation or two. Big changes are coming. There are some relevant UFO themes here, as well. This article appears in the December/January 2003 issue of UFO Magazine.

Should the USAF Reopen Project Blue Book?
1974 Air Command and Staff College Research Study, Air University, Report No. 0450-74
This study evaluates factors related to the USAF investigation of Unidentified Flying Objects in an attempt to determine whether or not additional UFO investigation is warranted. The approach to analysis taken by this study was twofold: one writer evaluated evidence justifying the closure of Project Blue Book while the other writer evaluated evidence supporting its reopening. Based on the evidence uncovered, the study concludes that there is a definite need for a new UFO investigation.

One Universe, One People
Steven Greer, MD (CSETI / The Disclosure Project)
One of the greatest tasks humanity has faced throughout history is the establishment of peace and unity among differing and diverse peoples. As great as the challenges to unity have been and continue to be for humans, how much greater might this be for the emerging and embryonic relationship between humans and extraterrestrial civilizations.

Fermi's Paradox I: Our Galaxy Should Be Teeming With Civilizations, But Where Are They?

Fermi's Paradox II: What's Blocking Galactic Civilization? Or Are We Just Blind To It?
Seth Shostak
Could galactic empires exist? In a previous article, we noted that there has been plenty of time for aliens keen on colonizing the Milky Way to pull it off. However, we see no signs of galactic federation ("Star Trek" aside). Why does the cosmos look so untouched and unconquered? What is keeping advanced extraterrestrials from claiming every star system in sight?

Fermi's Paradox III: Zookeepers, Alien Visitors, Or Simple Life; How Can We Explain Our Isolation?

We seem to have the Galaxy to ourselves. At least, that’s the obvious conclusion from the apparent lack of aliens in the neighborhood. But this conclusion might be a bit too obvious, and possibly wrong.

Formulation and Predictions of the ETH
Brian Zeiler
The extraterrestrial hypothesis, or ETH, is formulated consistent with the accepted scientific framework for hypothesis induction. The null hypothesis to explain UFOs is that they are random, disparate misidentifications of atmospheric or artifical terrestrial phenomena. This is called the misidentification hypothesis. If rejected on sufficient grounds -- and due to the subjectivity we are probably facing a more Bayesian type of inference than an objective test approach -- then we accept the alternative hypothesis, which is that disk-shaped vehicles are in fact flying in our atmosphere.

J. Allen Hynek on Project Blue Book
Excerpt from the book, "The UFO Experience - A Scientific Inquiry", by J. Allen Hynek
The popular impression through the years was that Blue Book was a full-fledged, serious operation. The public perhaps envisioned a spacious, well-staffed office with rows of file cabinets, a computer terminal for querying the UFO data bank, and groups of scientists quietly studying reports, attended by a
staff of assistants. The actual situation was unfortunately the opposite.

An Analysis of the Condon Report on the Colorado UFO Project
Peter A. Sturrock (Stanford University), Journal for Scientific Exploration
In-depth analysis of the Condon Report details the many disagreements between Condon's dismissive summary and the actual data. - The analysis of evidence by categories shows that there are substantial and significant differences between the findings of the project staff and those that the director attributes to the project. Although both the director and the staff are cautious in stating conclusions, the staff tend to emphasize challenging cases and unanswered questions, whereas the director emphasizes the difficulty of further study and the probability that there is no scientific knowledge to be gained.
